{"id":673,"date":"2019-01-09T16:19:59","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T22:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/?p=673"},"modified":"2019-01-09T16:19:59","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T22:19:59","slug":"command-prompt-deriving-unc-network-path","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/command-prompt-deriving-unc-network-path\/","title":{"rendered":"Command Prompt: Deriving UNC Network Path"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s the workaround I see many using when sending mapped-network paths via email:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In Windows Explorer, hold the <strong>shift<\/strong> button down,<strong> right-click<\/strong> on the file, and select <strong>Copy as path<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Insert a Hyperlink in the email and paste in the address field of the Hyperlink dialogue box. (Shortcut: Ctrl-V). At this point, the link will display the mapped drive letter as the root (Q:\\foo.docx).<\/li>\n<li>Now, <strong>right-click<\/strong> and select <strong>Edit Hyperlink&#8230;<\/strong>\u00a0you will notice that the Address field has been translated back into the full UNC path (\\\\cartman\\users\\emueller\\foo.docx). With your mouse in the Address field, hit <strong>Ctrl-A<\/strong> and <strong>Ctrl-C<\/strong> to copy the full path to your clipboard, then move your cursor to the top field (<strong>Text to Display:<\/strong>) hit <strong>Ctrl-A<\/strong> and <strong>Ctrl-V<\/strong> to display it correctly in your email.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>However, finding the UNC network paths for all mapped drives is quite simple using Command Prompt:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start &gt; Start Search box &gt; enter\u00a0<b>cmd<\/b>\u00a0&gt; Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Command window &gt; type\u00a0<b>net use<\/b>\u00a0&gt; Enter &gt; make a note of the required path &gt; type\u00a0<b>Exit<\/b>\u00a0&gt; Enter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/UNC-network-path-mapped-drives.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-676 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/UNC-network-path-mapped-drives.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"979\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/UNC-network-path-mapped-drives.png 979w, https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/UNC-network-path-mapped-drives-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/offtherichterdesign.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/UNC-network-path-mapped-drives-768x402.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s the workaround I see many using when sending mapped-network paths via email: In Windows Explorer, hold the shift button down, right-click on the file, and select Copy as path.
